The script had been finalised, the trailers previewed. We got the unforgettable show, just not the one we were promised.

The cricketing world cast a rare glance at Belfast for the debut of Vaibhav Sooryavanshi today, with Ireland expected to act as the Washington Generals to India’s Harlem Globetrotters. Instead, the hosts sprang one of those T20 surprises, beating the world champions handily before sizeable contingents of their own disbelieving fans. Vaibhav ran drinks, quietly shilling Apollo Tyres.
