Australia has pulled off a comprehensive 133-run victory overnight to ensure retention of the Frank Worrell Trophy, the batsmen providing a hard-fought 276 lead that proved more than adequate for a finely honed bowling attack that bowled out the West Indies for just 143.
Alex Carey squeezed out Beau Webster for Player of the Match, the keeper scoring 63 and 30 important runs, while sharp behind the stumps.
Pat Cummins said the win was pleasing.
“Both Test matches were pretty tight at times, and that's kind of grafted our way out of a bit of a spot in both the Test matches. We’ve had to find a way to win, the West Indies are a pretty good side at home, so I’m pretty proud,” he said.
“The new ball moving was pretty tricky in both games for both teams. As a batsman you’ve got to weather the good spells until the conditions turn in your favour and just be clear of the couple of areas where you want to score.
“It was an away win as well, they’re not the easiest to come by, so pumped with how we bounced back after Lord’s a few weeks ago. It’s been a good few wins, we’ve been tested at times.
Cummins was full of praise for the efforts of the batter in trying conditions, particularly Cam Green and Steve Smith, who put on 93 runs at a crucial time on Day 3.
“Turning up to the gound yesterday, we were expecting to bowl at some time yesterday, but that innings was brilliant. Not only is it a tricky wicket, but it was really hot as well and they just found a way. They were really clinical in the areas they wanted to score, kept it ticking over and that was a pretty tricky period out there and that really set us up.”
The captain noted Carey’s contribution over the past 12 months.
“He is about four or five years into his Test career, I think the last year or so it’s probably been his most prolific, he looks really settled. Any opposition that has a No.7 who walks in and you know they can move the game quickly, they are some of the scariest players, and we feel really lucky to have Kes in our side, last week I thought he was close to Man of the match as well. It’s a really tricky period to bat around five, six and seven, the game’s normally in the balance, but time and time again, him and a couple of the others will take the game away from the opposition.”
The West Indies made short work of the Australian tail, knocking over Pat Cummins (4), Alex Carey (30) and Josh Hazlewood (4) in next to no time after play resumed on the fourth day.
