Would he be in an all time Indian XI or is that just recency bias? Numbers-wise of course he would.

I believe just like Dhoni would enter any all time Indian XI in any format as a captain, same way Ashwin would enter any all time Indian Test XI without any doubts. Some players become bigger than what the stats tell us.

Probably the best spinner of the last twenty years, and innovative. In the 2021 masked Sydney test, probably more Covid Marshalls than paying patrons on the last day, Ashwin and his little mate Vihari, who hasn’t been seen since, batted out to deny Australia an almost certain victory. Ashwin had a folded thigh pad shoved down the back of his pants, helped him retain focus he said. It worked, and sometimes between overs Vihari took it on. Might have distracted the Aussies.

Didn't see that coming ! An emotional moment for Indian cricket fans ..

Ashwin has been hard done by w.r.t selection in recent times .

A highly intelligent and adaptable cricketer who has pured his heart and soul into the game and still continues to inspire grassroots cricket in his home state of Tamil Nadu.

I think he was probably the best bowler from either side last time India toured here and a big part of their winning in spite of so many injuries

What an unfortunate finish for a remarkable career. I am glad he concluded with such dignity. Well played to an all time great. I could never quite work out what was going on selection wise!

Dependable off spinner for India - expendable; sporadic off spinner for Australia - the GOAT.

Ashwin is definitely a proven matchwinner and stats-wise one of India's best offies ever . In terms of sheer genius and artistry , I would have Erapalli Prasanna ahead of him, and Harbhajan is in the conversation, too.

Ashwin has been a very fine cricketer (what a great set of stats) & also a very fierce competitor - he’ll be missed by India.

All the best to him.
