I first photographed what I’ll call a ‘proper’ cricket match in November 1987. I thought I remembered it all pretty well but having just looked at the scorecard from this game I obviously don’t have the recall I thought I had.
I do know I was sent to Newcastle for an entire Sheffield Shield match between New South Wales and Queensland. I do know that I took a photograph of bowler Michael Whitney celebrating a dismissal in this match that won me 500 dollars and an award from the NSW Cricket association, $500 probably being enough dosh at the time to have purchased a small flat overlooking Bondi Beach. I do know there was not a massive crowd in attendance.
