In the absence of any local cricket news, I’ve been collecting twigs to bring you this flimsy construction of things that have caught my interest.
Please excuse any mishaps, as a terrible thing has happened to my laptop, which makes writing and publishing a little bit more difficult than it should be.
DO WE NEED TO TALK ABOUT PHOEBE?
The UK Times is an essential subscription for cricket fans because Michael Atherton is one of England’s must-read journalists. Elizabeth Ammon is also a very good news source (and a source of endless amusement in the press box). The paper’s Neil Squires did an interesting interview with our Phoebe Litchfield this week in which the lively 22-year-old announces that The Hundred is her favourite tournament.
Litchfield and Annabel Sutherland have been critical to the Northern Superchargers success this year, but it was Litchfield’s declaration that she prefers The Hundred to the WIPL and the WBBL, that led the article in the English press.
Suggestions The Hundred get serious and make itself a T20 tournament gained this response from Litchfield:
“It would be disappointing because I really enjoy the format that they’ve created. It’s different and I find it interesting,” Litchfield. So many players these days are playing T20 cricket everywhere in the world and the Hundred gives us a different stimulus to engage the brain. The tactics are different, the management of the game is different, even the way the scoreboard looks is different when you’re batting.
“It does break up the year because the Hundred is its own entity. It’s probably my favourite tournament to play in, of the big three. I love being home, obviously, but there’s an energy around the Hundred that’s unmatched with the rest of the world.
“The way they market it, the way it is presented on the day and the player experience is top-notch. If I wasn’t playing in it, I’d buy a ticket for it. People with their Pimm’s, having fun with their friends? That’s my ideal afternoon in the sun.”
