There are few things more grim than the banality and indulgence of press box chat, so apologies. It’s 2022, and the India-Pakistan MCG epic is unfurling itself accordingly. About halfway through the match, my colleague Higgos and I are invited into the commentary area to observe; we had some TGC work with the host broadcaster and were encouraged to meet a few of the team and to see how the sausage is made. It was a thoughtful gesture from our liaison and frankly a little out-of-keeping with the general vibe of press boxes, where most people are busy getting on with the immediate task at hand. It’s fair to say we felt more like Make A Wish Kids than colleagues on any sort of equal footing – saying more about us than anyone else. But we were grateful for the experience.
