Asked to bat for the final hour of the second day, leg-weary Sri Lanka lost 3-44 in response to Australia’s record 6-650. The visitors have the upper hand and plenty of time to take a 1-0 lead in the two match series.
Australian fans did not quite show up in the same numbers for the first session of the second day at Galle as they had the first. It had been a big start to the match for many, but the abstemious Usman Khawaja, arrived bright-eyed and ready to pick up from whence he’d left off.
“You have to take the good stuff when you get it,” he’d said the night before. “It doesn't come around very much.”
