GH wonders where it's gone
Presentation night, eh? We had ours about six weeks ago. Heartfelt speeches. Oaths sworn. Mutual mickey taking. A few too many. Ended at 5am. They’re a necessary part of every season, aren’t they? And by now everyone has had theirs…. except Australian cricket.
Twenty weeks have elapsed since it was foreshadowed that, in light of player commitments, the Australian Cricket Awards would ‘move to a virtual format’. But here we are, in mid-May, without an Allan Border Medallist, or male Test, ODI or T20I players of 2025-26. There is not even a date for their naming. I mean how difficult is it to organise a Zoom meeting?
One sympathises, of course. No sooner have our top players dispersed these days than they become almost untraceable. The men turn up, play, pose for a few selfies, then disappear to their various lucrative side hustles, with orders not to be disturbed: although we hear a lot about their relentless workloads, these are overwhelmingly self-imposed.
