For the fan, the cricket season tends to peter out. The player always knows when his summer is done. In my case, 2025-26 ended Saturday, when we trudged off defeated preliminary finalists - off the last ball and by one wicket, if you don’t mind, after a game that at times seemed firmly in our grasp. Gutting, of course, but we don’t look too down-hearted, do we? We are, after all, The Vincibles. Falling just short is something I’m accustomed to, and these days the victory is getting out there. It was in any case, as I find flicking through my camera roll, a summer of many excellent memories.

Here’s our skipper BG chronicling another typically solid Yarras start. I recruited him - we were email correspondents when he moved to Melbourne and asked if the Yarras had room for another broken down medium pacer. He did not need to ask twice. You’ll notice the four-coloured biro in his hand - the secret of his immaculate scorebooks. His spreadsheets as chairman of selectors look like he’s planning D-Day every weekend.
