The treatment of small businesses by bureaucracy is wrecking parts of our lives - and not many people seem to complain or have time to notice. In Drummoyne a small cafe/restaurant near the public swimming pool was doing nicely and had a regular clientele of post-swim, post run, or just ‘let us sit and enjoy the river view’. Came tender time and they have been no more. Whoever won the tender has simply closed the establishment! Obviously the small business was annoying or somehow detracting from a bigger concern nearby. We are all the poorer for the closure of these small, friendly, and individual eating establishments. Not everyone wants the mush served up by the big concerns- it costs in more than monetary ways. I admire your fighting spirit, Gideon, and hope that Michael finds another outlet for his trade.

HR does love a good ramp up, it lives by histrionic language. I shake my head. Where has common sense and decency fled?

Good on you Gideon. It might in itself be a small thing (although not to the current cafe operators I’m sure) but it is an example of so many seemingly stupid decisions these days by governments & local councils in Australia.

I can only assume they continue to make these decisions because we - the public - allow them to get away with it.

We have a very good current example here on the Gold Coast.

The council has a large works depot at Miami that is now ‘surplus to needs’ as is therefore going to be sold/redeveloped - which is great.

But it seems council still needs a much smaller depot at Miami. You would think they would retain a small back corner of the current site (that has good rod access & likely many of the facilities needed.

But no. Instead, they are planning to take over a nearby park that has many mature trees for what will largely be a staff parking area. The trees will mostly go, as will all the green space.

Luckily local residents are now aware & making a bit of a fuss I’m not aware of the latest/final decision. As late as last week, re-asphalting of part of the current depot grounds continues.

MAINTAIN THE RAGE!

It’s the only way to stop these stupid decisions.

That is so depressing, but good on you for taking the fight on.

Several years ago the Inter-library loan system was "paused", for some indeterminant reason, before resuming after many months. I wrote to multiple local (Sleepy Hollow) and regional politicians. Only one, an opposition member in Ballarat, responded but could offer little more than sympathy.

Do we hear anything from Jess Wilson & Co., Jacinta Andrews, any other politician or prominent Victorian person ? That would be just one, Gideon.

If you are moving steadily towards a one world Government there can be no Mr.Tulks. This is an ideological process and will most likely be concealed behind those essential clauses - improving efficiency, to benefit the patron experience et al.

Keep up the good work! Arts bureaucrats love a complex sentence, and whatever the latest buzzwords are in the corporate/management world

So sad - but as others have said such poor decision making has become endemic by politicians and bureaucrats and so many in the community appear disinterested in the consequences.

Great work GH. It deserves everyone’s support, so will pop in for a sanga soon.

Any further word on Harvey Lane? Maybe the proposed redevelopment of the Fitzroy oval should be renamed to the Harvey oval? The Harvey brothers certainly would have the ground record for runs and crease occupation. More meaningful than an old politician!

Cheers. Colin Waldron

The oval renamed properly to recognise the Harvey family, well overdue.

The atmosphere & food at Mr Tulks was always good &,the coffee excellent - may I say a cafes quality can always be judged by its hot chips & they were great

I can only second your recommendation of those hot chips, Jan. They are outstanding.

Your friends Michael and Maria Togias appear to have committed THE cardinal sin, whereby they have embarrassed a petty bureaucrat with power over them.

You know, when a place like a library pisses of a person like Gideon, we know the world is just not right.

Some of these management decisions wouldn’t be out of place in a Franz Kafka novel.
