Sunday marks the sesquicentenary of the birth of R. O. Schwarz. I noticed the imminence of the anniversary a few months ago and scribbled myself a diary note. He has always interested me as a cricketer, even if I’m not sure why he should interest anyone else. But journalism, Chesterton reminded us, is often about ‘saying Lord Jones is dead to people who never knew Lord Jones was alive.' So let me, briefly, present a case for Schwarz [below] as a suitable object for fascination.
