Eleven decades ago today, Victor Trumper was laid to rest in Sydney’s picturesque hilltop Waverley Cemetery. The procession drew crowds of as many as 20,000 and the cameras of the Australasian Gazette - remarkable in a population coming to terms with mass casualty abroad, but perhaps occasioned by the sense of something larger passing than just an athlete. In its own way, this continues applying, as the Trumper library continues growing.
This year has brought two new titles, books to bookend Trumper’s career: Young Vic, by Max Bonnell, is a monograph on Trumper’s first twenty years….
….while Trumper Across The Tasman, by Peter Schofield and Ric Sissons, concerns the mid-30s Trumper on his farewell tour, a year before his cortege stopped Sydney traffic.
