Ironically I drove that route across Gippsland and up the Monaro last year - albeit in a 4WD towing a 5th wheeler, a good deal more comfortable than Lennie and Ginger Mick.
Brillaint piece capturing how Lennie's journey became a symbol people needed during the Depression. The detail about him plowing 24 acres at nine to help his injured father really shows the mindset that made this ride possible. I remember learning abit about the Bridge's opening in school but Lennie's story never came up, which is wild considering how much it galvanized folks at the time.
Come for the cricket, stay for the Et Al, thanks
Peter, thank you for reproducing this for us. Much appreciated - living 30 minutes out of Leongatha on the coast at Cape Paterson. A great read!
Great part of the world.
