Chennai Revisited
GH welcomes another long-distance scoring epic
Et Al has been savouring the silver jubilee of one of the towering Test series of the modern era, the 2001 Border-Gavaskar Trophy, with an accent on the Kolkata Test here and here. Now our man Thomas Miles has come through again, rescoring the game from the replays on Fox, to produce this astonishing ball-by-ball recapitulation of the Chennai Test, where India wrapped up the series 2-1 in a nipping fourth-innings chase.
Relive it all with this guy….
….versus this guy….
…versus these guys…
…versus the guy who arguably had the last word of all.
These highlights reinforce how crucial was Steve Waugh’s handled the ball on the second morning - also how Ravi Shastri’s voice, here heard in the company of Chappelli, Greigy and Hookesy, has over the years gone from basso profundo to downright stentorian.
Anyway, please enjoy Thomas’s grand fusion of cricket, mathematics and art, which all his familiar retro flourishes and deep dives.
For more of Thomas’s handiwork, there’s always this.

Ah how the memory plays tricks. I distinctly remember being in a pub to watch the last session as we sought those final few wickets. I know exactlty who I was with and I can vividly recall the shot off Dizzy going down past slips for four which all but ended our hopes. But I thought Harbhajan hit the shot and the shape of the inside of the pub I think I was at doesn't look the same as the picture I have in my mind of my mates and me sat in front of a big screen... so strange
As I’ve said before oh for the eyesight of the young- incredible Thomas
